DESMI launches DesCan pump for liquefied CO2 infrastructure

News

DESMI has introduced a new pump technology designed to support the safe and reliable transfer of liquefied CO2 as carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects scale up globally.

The newly developed DesCan canned deepwell pump is engineered specifically for use in CO2 hubs, terminals and transport systems, where handling liquefied CO2 presents distinct operational challenges. As CCS moves from pilot projects to full-scale infrastructure, the transfer of captured CO2 between plants, storage facilities, pipelines and vessels is becoming increasingly critical.

The DesCan pump features a can-mounted vertical configuration, installed in a sump below liquid level to ensure flooded suction conditions. This design supports stable hydraulic performance, particularly in systems with limited net positive suction head (NPSH) margins.

“Carbon capture is only part of the equation. Once CO2 has been captured, it must be transported and stored safely and efficiently,” says Rasmus Folsø, Senior Vice President, New Green Solutions, DESMI.

“With DesCan we have applied our experience with deepwell pumps and liquid handling to develop a solution specifically suited for liquefied CO2 infrastructure.”

According to DESMI, the pump has been developed using operational insights and customer dialogue, addressing limitations in existing technologies originally designed for LNG or LPG applications. Liquefied CO2 presents different challenges, including higher density, low NPSH margins and sensitivity to flashing at the pump inlet.

“Liquefied CO2 operates close to its saturation conditions and behaves differently from many traditional gas terminal fluids,” adds Folsø.

“That requires a different approach to pump design. DesCan has been developed specifically with these operating conditions in mind.”

The company says the design also simplifies system layouts by removing the need for deep pump pits or elevated tanks, supporting more flexible and efficient CCS infrastructure development worldwide.
