Genus secures $55m substation contract with Rio Tinto

Genus has been tasked with the expansion of Rio Tinto’s Millstream substation in the Pilbara region of WA.

Construction of the 220kV Millstream upgrade will commence immediately and is expected to be completed in mid-2028. Genus will mobilise 50 personnel to the job.

It comes after Genus was awarded a three-year master construction agreement (MCA) for electrical, instrumentation and controls (EIC) works from Rio Tinto in March 2026. This involves the construction, brownfields expansion, and end-of-life replacement across Rio Tinto’s Pilbara iron ore operations spanning mines, ports, rail and supporting infrastructure.

Genus managing director David Riches said the contract validated the company’s growing track record of success.

“We are delighted to secure the 220kV Millstream substation contract and continue to build on our long and successful relationship with Rio Tinto,” he said. “This contract award is important as we convert our strong tender pipeline to orderbook heading into FY27 (2026–27 financial year).”

In early July, Genus completed its acquisition of MPK Kinetic, signalling its entrance into the gas sector. Formed in 2018 through the merger of Kinetic Energy Services and MPC, MPK has a diversified offering of gas gathering and well maintenance services for the Queensland gas sector, along with construction services for Australian renewable energy and pipeline projects.

MPK generated $533 million of revenue in FY25, which Genus said was a “strong performance … driven by outperformance, early completion, and release of profits on major renewable projects”.

“The acquisition of MPK will be transformational for Genus,” Riches said. “MPK is a high-quality business with a strong management team, blue-chip client base, and significant potential.

“The combination diversifies Genus into the attractive gas and water sector and accelerates our strategy to become the leading provider of critical infrastructure services across Australia.”
